Stay by Drew Gulliver

Stay is a song about wanting to feel those magical feelings of childhood every day of your life.

The first stanza is a declaration to choose joy everyday. To shine through the hard stuff and always be open to your friends, not pushing them away. The second stanza or the chorus is a description of the childhood memories that I want to hold on to. The memories of pillow forts and sneakily staying up late while hiding under a blanket to read a book . Actually, not just the memories, but more so the way those things and a good childhood in general can make you feel: safe, loved, and free to explore. This whole song is a debate with myself whether or not giving up the magical feelings of childhood are worth growing up for. The last stanza shows a hope that I had: that I would one day meet my “Prince Charming” who would keep the magic alive and make me feel like a child again. That way I didn’t have to give up anything. Once I found my compromise I was indeed “willing to stay”.

Oh, and maybe I should mention that I wrote this song when I was about 12 years old. Apparently 12 year old me knew exactly what I wanted, because I grew up to find my Prince Charming to make pillow forts with, dress our very own little girls in pink and pigtails, and explore this world with me.

Shine through your pain and strife
Shine through the day with love in mind
Shine let your friends grow near
Come with me now, come with me here

To the place I call home
To the place I call my secret fortress
Hiding under covers with a flashlight and a book
Childhood memories running back all along the pages

Flip flops sandals pink everyday
Pigtails ice cream and running away
Wish i had that everyday
Now all i have is you and i’m willing to stay

But first, come with me here
To the place that i call home
To the place i call my secret fortress
Hiding under covers with a flashlight and a book
Childhood memories running back along the pages

Don’t need that anymore to remind me of the good times
That’s what i wanted to show you
You have my heart, i love you prince charming
Now all i have is you and i’m willing to stay
Flip flops sandals pink everyday
Pigtails ice cream and running away
With you I’d have that everyday
Now all i have is you and i’m willing to stay
